Common Skincare Mistakes

  • Oily Skin? Don't skip moisturizer! This can be counter-productive, as it causes the skin to overcompensate by producing more oils. Moisturizers replenish and protect the skin's barrier, as well as balance oil and moisture in the skin. If you have oily skin, opt for a water-based moisturizer that is free of oils.

  • Sunscreen needs to be worn daily, regardless of skin color, weather, or daily activities. Staying indoors? Sunscreen. Going out? Sunscreen. Hot and sunny day? Sunscreen. Cold and wet day? Sunscreen. Fair skinned? Sunscreen. Dark Skinned. Sunscreen.

  • Cosmetic products do expire. Those expired products lose their potency, and can grow harmful bacteria. Be sure to keep an eye on the shelf life of your products. Look for this symbol (       ) accompanied by a number (i.e. 12M, 24M) which indicates how many months the product lasts after opening.

  • Facial brushes may seem helpful, but they can actually be doing more harm than good. Not only are they abrasive and irritating to the skin, but they are also a breeding ground for bacteria. Think of facial brushes as exfoliators rather than cleansers. You should limit the use of facial brushes to 1-2 times per week, and wash and allow them to dry completely between uses. You can also soak the bristles in alcohol to disinfect.
